Course description
[Outline of class] In daily life, there are air flows around human bodies and around houses and buildings as natural phenomena, and on the other hand, air and water flows are artificially used for air conditioning and water supply. In transportation such as aircrafts and automobiles, which are the targets of mechanical engineering, the flow mode of air around them affects the running performance of the machines. In addition, there are many cases where efficient cooling and heating are performed by the flow of air or water. As for studying the details of the fluid motions, however, experiments and measurements are often difficult to do. Therefore, computer simulations are used. This academic field is named Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
The purpose of this class is to learn the outline of the numerical method in CFD programs and to exercise the use of CFD software. After training of the software, students freely setup a practical problem and perform simulations about it and make presentations on the result.
Purpose of class
[Achievement goal] Understand the outline of the discretization method of differential equations used in CFD simulation, and practice numerical simulations of thermo-fluid problems with several examples and exercises using a practical software.
Goals and objectives
  1. It is expected that basic solutions for numerical solutions of differential equations will be able to be applied to problems.
  2. It is expected that numerical solution of heat conduction equation can be obtained about basic problems, and that numerical analysis of temperature field with flow can be performed.
  3. It is expected that modeling, calculation, and plotting works can be performed using practical thermo-fluid analysis software, and that the software can be applied to actual basic problems properly.
