4 Graduation Thesis 4
In Graduation Thesis 4, students will continue to work on research themes related to mechanical engineering based on the activities
in Graduation Thesis 3. This will improve practical problem-solving skills, techniques for writing research papers, and communication
skills for carrying out research activities and accurately communicating research results.
Graduation Thesis 4 is the final stage of the research activities developed since Graduation Thesis 1. During this stage,
students are expected to attain a high level of proficiency in problem formulation, conceptualization, problem-solving, planning,
self-directed learning, communication, and teamwork skills. The goal of Graduation Thesis 4 is to summarize the results of
these activities in a graduation thesis, and the degree of achievement will be evaluated in conjunction with a final review
of the oral presentation.
The objective of this course is to enable students to independently examine solutions to unfamiliar problems using their expertise
and effectively communicate the results of their investigations through written papers and oral presentations.
- Students can communicate their opinion and explanation of the research result etc. Also, they can understand other person's
comments or questions, and discuss with professors and other students.
- Student can work cooperatively with others in the process of problem solving.
- Students can understand the background of the problem, clarify the research purpose and focus the research subjects.
- Students can utilize their expert knowledge, combine the appropriate experiments and analytical methods, and propose how to
solve the problem.
- Students can examine solutions to problems by improving experimental methods, equipment, and programs, and by analyzing the
results of experiments and analyses.
- Students can manage their research plan and perform by the deadline.
Students acquire the skill for the topics and how to survey the information or the knowledge by using the Internet, etc..
Students have to learn continuously and autonomously.

Thermal Fluid Science and Engineering
The students will work on topics related to thermal fluid science and enginerring.
In Graduate Theses 3, the emphasis is placed on problems finding and solutions proposal for the research activity. In Graduate
Theses 4, the students will work on the resaearch activities for solving the problems found in the Graduate Theses 3, They
will summarize the work as graduate theses and complete their work with the final exqamination (theses defense).
The follwoing are some of the research topics.
1. Research based on flow visualization and measurements of complex fluid flows.
2. Resarch based on the particle motion and fluid flow near the vicinity of a solid wall.
3. Research based on photoacoustic measurement of fluid flows.
4. Research based on flow birefringence for fluid shear measurements.
5. Research based on the principle of laser Doppler method for flow measurements.
The students are required to work on the research activities through investigating backgrounds, finding problems, seeking
for solutions and conducting research (theory development, modling, design, experiment, numerical analysis). They must report
their progress at regularly held laboratory meetings in addition to the intermediate and final exmainations. In addition,
they are requested to record their progress on laboratory notebooks provided at the lab and to report their progress to their
supervisors. The students are asked to work on the research topics in an autonmous way and positively participate in the discussions
with the supervisors and other students.
