Course content
This course explores the concept of 'good governance' and its important role in realizing sustainable development, with a particular focus on fostering green transformation. We will explore diverse strategies available to governments, industries, and society for accelrating the shift of societal and technological systems towards enhanced sustainability. By looking at diverse governance frameworks (policies, institutional mechanisms such as industry regulations, business models, and collaborations between government and industry), we examine the dynamic responsibilities of governments, the private sector, and civil society in addressing sustainability challenges related to the pursuit of a green transformation.
Purpose of class
Students will gain insights into the multifaceted nature of governance, spanning local, national, multilevel, and global dimensions. The course draws on examples from various countries and regions to provide a nuanced understanding of these governance dynamics.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students will be familiar with the principles of 'good governance' and its important role in realizing sustainable development.
  2. Students will develop theoretical and practical knowledge of different ways that societal actors can transform society and accelerate the diffusion or abolishment of new and existing technologies.
  3. Students will explore best practices illustrating successful governance practicies in addressing sustainability challenges in the area of green transformation
  4. As well as learning from real-world case studies, students will learn social science research methods and conceptual frameworks from various fields such as sustainability transitions, public policy, and political science.
