Course content
Japanese cities have already entered into an era of decreasing populations, and measures to respond to a dwindling birthrate and an aging population, urban depopulation, and in some cases, urban shrinking (smart shrink) measures must be instituted. As well, measures to respond to global warming have become urgent and important urban development topics. As we are now entering a phase of major urban change, cities are faced with circumstances which they have never experienced before.
With a focus on residential urban areas, the course will discuss contemporary problems and issues surrounding cities, based on the practical experiences of urban planning consultants. While introducing examples of measures to resolve these issues, students will research various plans, systems, development methods etc. relating to urban development and improvement, and will consider directions for urban development and urban environmental improvement.
The course will invite specialists from various fields to lecture, and students will actually walk the streets to ascertain the conditions of development and improvement.
Purpose of class
While introducing the case to solve the contemporary issues and challenges surrounding the city, a variety of plans for improvement and urban development, system, aims to learn the way of the development method.
Goals and objectives
  1. Participants will be able to understand the issues obtained from the evaluation of urban environment, learn the characteristics of the area, and the methodology leading to the problem extraction problem.
  2. Participants will be able to master the planning and presentation of each section plan of the urban area improvement plan, and draft and propose an urban area improvement plan as a case study.
