Kansei Design Theory

Course content
As technology advances, products and services become more sophisticated, leading to increasingly complex and refined consumer needs. This suggests that as expectations for products rise, their value is determined by how well they fulfill those expectations. If a product fails to meet or differs from the expectations held beforehand, its evaluation tends to decline.
Additionally, when assessing a product, people often make assumptions about its nature based on its appearance. In other words, the visual design of a product conveys its image and concept. When this visual explanation aligns with consumer needs, it fosters a sense of resonance and leads to heightened expectations for the product.
In this lecture, we will explore the explanatory power of formative expression and deepen our understanding of the relationship between expression and impression through practical exercises.
・The course content may vary depending on the number of enrolled students.
・The subject of formative expression may be adjusted according to the enrolled students.
Purpose of class
The objective is to explore the relationship between formative expression (such as shape, color, and representation) and its impression, and to learn through practice how to create expressions that align with a given concept.
Goals and objectives
  1. Be able to set an experimental objective with design expression in mind.
  2. Be able to construct an experimental plan tailored to the objective, focusing on formative expression and its evaluation based on the combination of various elements.
  3. Be able to create design expressions based on insights gained from experimental results.
  4. Be able to fully explain the intent behind the design expression.
