3 Intellectual Property Law
Intellectual Property Law protects intellectual (technical or cultural) creative activities and their results. With technological
advances, industrial progress and changes in mode of transaction, this legal field is increasingly important in recent years.
This course focuses on the Patent Act and the Copyright Act.
* The classes will be conducted face-to-face in principle.
Toyosu: Spring/Fall, Friday 2nd period
The course aims to help students learn an overview of intellectual property law. Students understand rights, judicial precedent,
revision, and so on. They apply knowledge obtained, by thinking voluntarily.
- To learn an overview of intellectual property law and developments of legal system, understand and explain revisions and new
important precedent.
- To learn the significance and role of intellectual property rights in modern society, understand and explain industrial property
law (the Patent Act, the Utility Model Act, the Design Act and the Trademark Act), the Copyright Act and the Unfair Competition
Prevention Act.
- To recognize that intellectual property is familiar problem and to think voluntarily with legal mind on the basis of facts
regarding intellectual property.
- To understand and apply contents of intellectual property law including procedures, if a student aspires to be a patent attorney
or a Certified Specialist of Intellectual Property Management.

Evaluation method and criteria
The allocation of the overall grade for this course is presented below:
・Submission of Documents, etc.: 40%
・Midterm Examination: 30%
・Final Examination: 30%
To pass the course, students must earn at least 60 points of 100. Students can score 60 points or more if they can state their
opinions and answer questions in assignments and the examinations, about the topics discussed in class and key topics in
the textbook.
Students are required to attend at least two-thirds of the total number of classes. If this requirement is not fulfilled,
credit will not be awarded.
