Mechanics of Materials 1

SAKAUE Kenichi

YOSHIHARA Shouichirou
Course description
In order to design of mechanical elements and structures, the calculation of strength is necessary to ensure the safety usage without fracture. The calculation of deformation is also needed to ensure the mechanical operation without interfering among deformed mechanical parts. Since these strength and deformation calculations are based on "Mechanics of material", Mechanics of materials" is necessary for the design of machine elements and structures. In this lecture, basic concepts of material mechanics such as stress, strain, Hooke's law, mechanical properties of materials, and safety design will be explained. This lecture also explains the analysis methods for mechanical analyses for bars subjected to tension and compression, truss structures, and beams subjected to bending.
Purpose of class
Designing machines and structures are need to ensure safety use based on analyses of stress/deformation of the objects. Mechanics of materials has a important role for design by rule, and it is necessary technical knowledge for mechanical engineers.

The purpose of this class is understanding a part of the concept of design by rule, the stress/deformation analysis of simple bar members and beams.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understanding the basic concepts of mechanics of materials such as stress, strain and Hooke's law.
  2. Understanding the stress and deformation analysis for structural bars subjected to axial loads.
  3. Understanding the bending stress and deflection analysis for beams subjected to bending moments.
