Advanced Mechanical Engineering 1 (Instrumentation Engineering)

MATSUO Shigeki
Course description
Optics and related technologies have come to play an important role in modern science and technology, and mechanical engineering is no exception. Even if one does not necessarily specialize in optics, light is often used as a tool for various types of measurements. For example, distance and length measurements using light are used in a wide range of applications, from sub-nanometer precision measurements to cosmic-scale long-distance measurements. In this course, we will discuss optics and optical measurement, as well as lasers, which are an important light source in optical measurements.
Purpose of class
To acquire the fundamentals of optics and optical measurement techniques and to be able to apply them to mechanical engineering.
Goals and objectives
  1. To be able to explain the fundamental properties of light and its applications.
  2. To be able to explain light propagation including diffraction and interference.
  3. To be able to explain the principles and applications of lasers.
  4. To be able to explain the principles and applications of optical measurements.
