Audio and Digital Sound Processing

KINOSHITA Yuichiro
Course description
This course is designed to introduce students to the techniques of sound processing including basic aspects of human hearing, physics of acoustics, cognitive psychology of hearing, audio transmission quality, digital audio, and speech synthesis and speech recognition technology.
Purpose of class
In the first half of the lecture, participants learn analogue aspects centered on the correspondence between the physical properties of sound and human senses. In the second half of the lecture, participants learn the basics of audio signal processing, and then learn about coding of speech signals, speech synthesis, and speech recognition.
Goals and objectives
  1. Be able to explain the outline of basic concepts related to sound and sound processing engineering and the basic mechanism of sound information processing.
  2. Be able to explain basic technical terms related to acoustic and speech processing engineering.
  3. Be able to explain representative techniques and information processing methods related to digital sound processing.

Evaluation method and criteria
- The mid-term and final examinations will be conducted by means of paper tests.
- Students who have been absent from the class five times or more will be considered to have withdrawn from the course, and their grade will not be evaluated.

The passing criteria (60%) include the ability to generally explain the fundamental concepts related to sound and sound processing engineering and to generally explain the representative techniques and information processing methods related to digital sound processing.
