Decision-making Theory

MUTO Masayoshi
Course description
Decision-making theory is broadly divided into individual decision making and social decision making. From a systems science perspective, the former includes expected utility theory (applied to insurance systems, etc.) and revealed preference theory, which take into account attitudes toward risk and other factors associated with probability, while the latter includes social choice theory (applied to voting systems and policy making, etc.), which derives collective choices from the preference order of various individuals. In between individual and social decision making is game theory.

Game theory analyzes complex strategic decision-making situations (interactions) in which people mutually choose actions that affect the interests of others as well as their own. By studying game theory, you will gain an analytical frame of reference that provides a clear mathematical and systems understanding of individual decision making, social decision making, and the strategic decisions that lie in between.
Purpose of class
This lecture covers introductory game theory. Game theory is an academic field that deals with situations in which multiple decisions affect each other, and is applied in various fields such as economics, business administration, sociology, political science, biology, and computer science. In this lecture, students will learn the introductory contents of game theory through applied examples.
