Course description

This course introduces the foundations of chemistry based on fundamental quantum mechanics to the 1st year students of the department of applied chemistry.
At the beginning student will learn the basic concepts of quantum mechanics for understanding the behavior of electrons in atoms and molecules, then they will learn how to predict the structures and properties of simple molecules, and finally they will learn how to apply the principles to inorganic coordination chemistry and organic chemistry.

Purpose of class

The aim of this course is to help students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to learn advanced chemistry in the courses of the department of applied chemistry.

Goals and objectives

To understand that electron has bilateral character of particle and wave, and that the energy of matter is quantized.
To be able to predict chemical properties of elements up to 4th period by describing the electron configuration of the elements.
To be able to identify the shape of the molecule and the type of the hybrid orbital concerning the central atom for the given molecule.
To be able to explain the correlation between the properties of metal complexes such as structure, color, or magnetic properties, and the electronic properties of the complex.
To be able to predict the reactivity of organic compounds and the stability of reaction intermediates based on the molecular structures, and to be able to describe organic reaction mechanisms using curved arrows.

Evaluation method and criteria

Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process: Quizzes (50%), Mid-term examination (25%), and Term-end examination (25%). To pass, students must earn at least 60 points out of 100.

The target of this class are 1st-year students of the department of applied chemistry. There is no prerequisite for this class.

Please ask any time in your class if you have questions and problems. After the class, we will accept questions and consultation in the learning support room: The first semester, Mon / Fri (16:50~18:30), Tue / Thu (15:00~18:30); The second semester, Mon / Tue / Wed (16:50~18:30), Thu / Fri (15:00~18:30).
Prof. Asao Nakamura will accept questions on Tuesday from 13:10 to 18:30 at Rm 3100-2 on 1st floor of the 3rd building.
