Course description

Economic geography is a discipline which examines economic activities from a geographical viewpoint in relation to regions and spaces. This course provides basic concepts and theories which are helpful to understand various economic phenomenon in a region. It deals also with the effects of globalization to each region, which could be a key point to find the solution of contemporary regional issues.

Purpose of class

The aim of this course is to help students to gain the basic methods and theories of economic geography as well as the ability of comprehending and explaining about economic issues of each regions in the context of globalization.

Goals and objectives

To understand basic concepts and theories of regional geographies.
To be able to explain the situation of regional economies in Japan by using acquired concepts and theories.
To be able to explain logically one's own opinion about how regional economies can be reactivated.

Evaluation method and criteria

A minute paper is required to submit after every classes (60%) in addition to the final exam(40%). The final score will be determined by the total amount of points obtained (Passing score = 60 %). In case of a poor attendance (less than 2/3 of all classes), the student will get no credit.
