Course description

Globalization is a great change arising in the context different from "internationalization". It means the emergence of economic system in which a small event in a remote place may lead to a big surge, together with the fundamental transformation of values effecting individuals and families. This course examines the issues related to globalization, from economic, political, social, and cultural viewpoints, which would help students to understand the position of Japan in the world as well as diversity in Japanese society.

Purpose of class

The aim of this course is to help students to understand how contemporary issues related to injustice and inequality have been linked to the globalization, and how global social movements has occurred. Students are expected to gain various perspectives and the ability to find a way towards mutual understanding among those who have different values.

Goals and objectives

To understand various aspects of phenomenon called 'globalization'.
To be able to explain logically and concretely what changes the globalization bring to the contemporary society.
To be able to explain one's own opinion concerning social issues in globalized world, in taking account of the existence of different positions and values.

Evaluation method and criteria

A minute paper or a mini-exam is required to submit after every classes (50%) in addition to the presentation(10%) and the final exam(40%). The final score will be determined by the total amount of points obtained (Passing score = 60 %). In case of a poor attendance (less than 2/3 of all classes), the student will get no credit.
