Course description
What is “interface design”?
We tend to think of it simply as “the design of the point of contact between people and devices,” but it is by no means limited to that.
In this course, we primarily focus on interface design for devices. By studying people from a cognitive-science perspective, devices from the viewpoint of technological evolution, and the “dialogue” and “expression” that connect the two, we explore interface design as a form of product design from a holistic perspective. The ultimate goal of operating a device is not merely to make it easy to understand and use, but to ensure that the outcomes it enables enrich and improve our daily lives.
With this in mind, the first half of the course introduces the necessary knowledge through real examples. In the second half, students work on assigned themes as practical projects, and ultimately compile their work into a final product.
Purpose of class
In this course, we study interface design as a form of product design from a holistic perspective by examining the relationship between people and products, as well as the “dialogue” and “expression” that connect them.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand the role of interface design in product and service design.
  2. Acquire the skills to create interface designs with optimal expression and usability, based on the characteristics and target users of a product or service.
  3. Gain the knowledge and abilities to apply interface design to a wide range of products and services.

Evaluation method and criteria
Two written reports will account for 40%, and the final project submission (including presentation) will account for 60%. A total score of 60 points or higher is required to pass.
The passing standard is defined as having a basic understanding of interface fundamentals, being able to write reports based on that knowledge, and being able to explain one’s own interface design work.
