Purpose of class
The objective of this course is to understand internal actions (forces and moments) in structures under external loads in two areas: how structures resist external loads by internal actions; the distribution of internal actions within structures.
Course description
In the structural design of buildings, It is necessary to determine the Internal action (stresses) of structures under various loads such as dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and seismic loads. The course covers the fundamentals of structural analysis: force and moment, equilibrium, drawing Internal Force Diagram, for simple structures, namely statically determinate structures such as cantilever beam, simple beams, simply-supported portal frame, and truss structures.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand the basic methods of load transfer in statically determinate beam - tension, compression, bending, shear(internal actions).
  2. Understand the basic methods of load transfer in statically determinate frames - tension, compression, bending, shear(internal actions).
  3. Understand the basic methods of load transfer in statically determinate truss structures
  4. Apply the equations of equilibrium to determine the distribution of internal actions in a simple structure by drawing BMDs, SFDs, AFDs

Evaluation method and criteria
Final grade scheme is based on percentages of graded coursework. The weighting on each work is as follows:
Assignments: 50%
Mid-term Exam：25%
Final Exam: 25%
Grades on the assignments will be based both on correctness of the solution and on the quality of presentation of the calculations.
