Purpose of class
To develop the ability to think about architecture and cities from a broad perspective that encompasses both rationality and appeal—essential for future practice in architectural design—and to formulate realistic proposals.
Course content
A design studio-style design exercise led by multiple faculty members.
This course addresses practical problems facing contemporary architectural design, guiding students through the entire process from research and investigation to design proposals.
Unlike typical undergraduate design or research courses focused on solving assigned problems, this course requires students to identify their own problems and develop solutions. It demands the ability to connect observations gained from visiting actual cities and sites to broader urban and social issues, and to derive effective architectural proposals from the insights gained.
(Internship-related course)
Goals and objectives
  1. 1. Develop investigative and research skills (gain the ability to visit specific towns, identify some kind of “problem” there, and demonstrate the severity of that “problem”)
  2. 2. Develop architectural conceptual and planning skills (Acquire the planning and conceptual abilities necessary for site selection and program definition in architectural design)
  3. 3. Enhance architectural design capabilities (Acquire the ability to create compelling and persuasive designs. Also develop the ability to communicate these effectively to others.)

Evaluation method and criteria
Grades will be determined based on a ratio of approximately 70% for submitted work and 30% for presentations.
The maximum score is 100 points, with a passing grade of 60 points or higher. A score of 60 points or higher indicates that, on average for each learning objective, the student can understand the content and execute it with guidance.

Textbooks and reference materials
Reference book: Explained in class
Prerequisites
Attend the orientation for new students to hear the course explanation and thoroughly review the materials provided.
Select several completed architectural projects, conduct site visits and gather reference materials, then prepare a report outlining the social significance and originality of each project. Prior to this, organize your own values by examining other projects.
