Purpose of class
The purpose of this course is to help students to understand fundamentals of optics and how they are utilized in optical fiber sensing. This course also helps students acquire ability to apply the knowledge of optics to various fields including the specialized field of the student’s self.
Course content
Today, the data transmission with high speed and large capacitance has been realized through optical communication systems, and one main component of the system is optical fiber. However, optical fibers are used not only for telecommunications but also for sensor applications. In this course, various physical phenomena in optical fibers and their sensing principles will be discussed while considering the state-of-the-art optical techniques.

  2. Being able to explain various physical phenomena in optical fibers and its sensing principles.
  3. Being able to utilize the technical knowledge of optics in their own specialty.

Evaluation method and criteria
Presentations and discussion 60%, midterm report 20%, final report 20%. Total score of 60% is needed to get a credit.
Students can get the total score of 60% if they can explain various physical phenomena in optical fibers and their sensing principles.

Students are expected to review the fundamentals of optics, electromagnetics, and measurement engineering. It is also desirable to become familiar with current research trends in application areas of optical fiber sensors, such as structural health monitoring, medical sensing, and environmental monitoring.
