Design Process Theory

SHIGERI Mitsuhiro
Purpose of class
By revisiting the design process acquired over four years and designing and executing the necessary design process for each project ourselves, we cultivate the ability to lead design work. Simultaneously, we develop the ability to accurately analyze each activity, extract concepts and ideas, and translate them into concrete designs.
Course content
The course is conducted in a workshop format, progressing through group work and individual work.
Students are given a theme and must design the process for extracting insights, determining concepts, and translating them into concrete designs.
Evaluation is based on reports covering interim research and progress, as well as the final deliverable (in the 2025 academic year, the assignment focused on graphic design).
As part of the course progression, students must have learned/experienced design processes, including design thinking, and be proficient in Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop to enroll.

As a pre-assignment, prepare a presentation titled "About Design Thinking" summarizing your own thoughts and experiences regarding design thinking.
Goals and objectives
  1. Be able to independently design and propose the direction for a given design project.
  2. Properly analyze the results of research and ideation to extract outcomes. Able to extract concepts.
  3. Be able to translate survey results and concepts into compelling designs.
