Course content
This course systematically covers the essence of Management of Technology (MOT), tracing its emergence and exploring its growing necessity in the evolving economic and social landscape.
In the 1980s, Western nations, then economic superpowers, found traditional management theory insufficient to counter emerging nations’ competitiveness and the spread and evolution of digital technology. They systematized and promoted Management of Technology (MOT) as a new management theory to leverage technology and regain international competitiveness. Japan, then an emerging nation, achieved rapid economic growth centered on manufacturing and became an advanced nation. Now in the opposite position, Japan must strengthen its international competitiveness to remain competitive against emerging nations. Furthermore, the evolution of digital technologies, including AI, has accelerated the pace of business competition, spawned new business models, and increased the complexity of competition. Therefore, it is necessary to master technology management to sustain both the resolution of societal challenges and the growth of one’s own company in response to these environmental changes.
This course focuses on value co-creation—the ultimate goal of technology management—and centers on learning the specific innovation management, technology strategy, and intellectual asset management practices necessary for its execution. Students will develop practical knowledge through understanding new business models based on rich case studies and honing critical thinking skills via case analysis.
