Purpose of class
Today's society is dependent on science and technology. At the same time, social issues stemming from science and technology are becoming increasingly serious. In such an era, the importance of considering “How science and technology work” is growing. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a practical understanding and mastery of the fundamental concepts and methodologies necessary for examining science and technology from a historical and societal perspective, using specific topics from Science and Technology Studies(STS) including history of science.
Course content
(Note: Students are required to have the ability of reading, writing and communicating in Japanese.)
This course aims to deepen students' understanding of “How science and technology work” as practitioners in science and technology, and to establish perspectives for comprehending the relationship between science, technology, and society. Students will examine specific topics related to science and technology from historical and societal viewpoints, gaining a practical understanding of fundamental concepts and methodologies of STS including history of science. By analyzing various societal issues stemming from science and technology through the lens of STS, the course aims to enable students to articulate their own perspectives as stakeholders involved in science and technology.

  1. Comprehend and explain the fundamental concepts and methodologies of STS including history of science.
  2. Analyze and explain based on historical and societal aspects the interactions between science and technology, and society.
  3. Critically and logically argue and explain one’s thoughts based on knowledge acquired from research.
  4. Write essays to critically and logically explain one’s thoughts based on knowledge acquired from research.
  5. Comprehend the LOs of this course to evaluate one's achievements.

Evaluation method and criteria
Students are required to submit Discussion Sheets at the end of classes, do presentations in classes, write Essay Reports after classes, which consist of 40%, 20%, 40% of grading respectively.
Note that no credits will be given for those who do not submit Essay Reports.
