Purpose of class
The purpose of this course is to understand the various factors at work in urban development and to acquire fundamental knowledge for interpreting the layered manifestations of elements influencing the formation of cities, such as urban theory, history, culture, and topography.
Course content
This course examines Tokyo’s urban structure and architecture. Lectures and field trips will focus not only on urban and architectural theory by Fumihiko Maki, but also on the actual players and design forces that shaped Tokyo.

  1. Study Fumihiko Maki’s urban theory and be able to explain it.
  2. Study the unique architectural conditions of Japan and be able to discuss it.
  3. Through project design, be able to understand the structure and development of cities.

Evaluation method and criteria
Grading will be based on reports and presentations (60%), the final presentation (20%), the final assignment (10%), and contribution to class discussions (10%). A score of 60 or higher (indicating understanding of the course content and achievement of more than half of the stated learning objectives) is required to pass.
