Building Structure /Exercise 1

KABAYAMA Kenji
Purpose of class
Aiming to maintain and improve people's safe and secure lives, students will acquire the ability to identify issues that need to be resolved from the perspective of architectural structure, devise procedures to address them, carry them out rationally, and consider further issues and improvement measures based on the results obtained.
Course content
Researches on seismic structures are the main theme of this course. Seismic codes and seismic technologies have been revised after each terrible earthquake disaster. Students of this course should research with exercises, experiments, analyses and/or surveys in order to solve suitable topics. “Seismic design method”, “mechanical theory”, “seismic performance” and “disaster prevention” are mentioned as an example of a topic. Thinking and acting by oneself during the research process are as important for students as the research outcomes.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand conventional ideas on earthquake engineering and structural engineering
  2. Understand the fundamental methods of designing, analyzing and experimenting related to building structure
  3. Taking up issues related to building structure and carrying out research autonomously

Evaluation method and criteria
The maximum score is 100, and is determined by the efforts to address issues and related activities (50%) and quality of reports, presentations, etc. (50%). A score of 60 or above is considered a pass.
60 points is a level that barely satisfies the goals set out in the achievement objectives.
