SHINTANI Mayu

TOCHINAI Fumihiko
Purpose of class
[Shintani] This course aims to enable students to develop the ability to independently conduct research grounded in language data analysis. Based on critical reading of relevant literature, students will formulate clear research questions, apply appropriate statistical and text-mining methods, interpret their findings rigorously, and disseminate their research outcomes through a thesis and presentations at domestic and international academic conferences.

[Tochinai] This course aims to enable students to develop the ability to independently conduct research grounded in the analysis of primary and secondary sources. Based on critical reading of literature-centered materials, students will formulate clear research questions, conduct historical and social analysis using appropriate concepts and methodologies of STS including history of science, and disseminate their research outcomes through a thesis and presentations at domestic and international academic conferences.
Course content
[Shintani] In today’s information-driven society, data mining techniques for extracting knowledge from vast data are becoming increasingly important. This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of fundamental statistical methods for language data analysis and develop skills in research paper writing and conference presentations. Specifically, students will learn to apply statistical methods, collect data, analyze results, and interpret findings through literature review and hands-on practice. Additionally, training will be provided on writing academic papers and presenting research outcomes at domestic and international conferences in both Japanese and English, to foster researchers and professionals capable of contributing on a global scale.

[Tochinai] Today, while science and technology are indispensable to support society, social issues stemming from science and technology are also becoming more serious. In such an era, the importance of examining the practice of science and technology itself is increasing. In this course, students will conduct literature reviews and other research using concepts and methodologies STS (Science, Technology, and Society) including history of science on a topic they select as their research subject. They will deepen their historical and social analysis, present their findings at relevant academic conferences, and write and publish a master's thesis.
Goals and objectives
  1. Develop the ability to critically read and comprehend academic papers and scholarly texts in both Japanese and English related to one’s research topic.
  2. Conduct analyses using appropriate methods suited to the research topic and develop the ability to interpret the results accurately.
  3. Produce a research paper by integrating critical literature review with the analysis of relevant materials and data.
  4. Deliver academic presentations related to the research and develop the ability to engage in scholarly discussion with other researchers.

Class schedule
[Shintani] This course deepens students’ understanding of fundamental statistical methods for language data analysis and develops their skills in text mining, academic writing, and conference presentation. Through critical reading of relevant literature, students learn how to apply statistical methods, collect and analyze data, and interpret their findings appropriately. Ultimately, students are expected to complete and submit a master’s thesis, present their research at domestic and international conferences, and pursue publication of their work in academic journals.

[Tochinai] This course develops students’ ability to conduct literature reviews, carefully read academic papers, and critically analyze them. students will enhance skills for presenting one's own perspectives derived from research, both in writing and orally. Specifically, students will learn how to interpret literature through close reading of primary and secondary sources related to their research topic, and will gain practical experience in qualitative research methods as needed. Ultimately, students are expected to complete and submit a master’s thesis, present their research at domestic and international conferences, and pursue publication of their work in academic journals.
Evaluation method and criteria
Students are required to attend weekly meetings with their academic supervisor, present prior research on a weekly basis, submit regular research progress reports, and deliver at least one conference presentation per year. Fulfilling these requirements will be regarded as meeting the minimum passing standard (60%). Performance beyond this level will be evaluated comprehensively based on the quality of presentations and the student’s overall contribution to the research group.
