Purpose of class
Develop the ability to propose designs rooted in user experience, not merely superficial aesthetics.
Learn methodologies and approaches applicable not only to product design but to all design creation activities.
Acquire compositional and sculptural skills in product design while enhancing presentation and documentation capabilities.
Course description
Utilizing the content from specialized courses taken thus far, students will create designs grounded in deeper thinking while practicing the entire process for product design creation. Simultaneously, they will acquire the knowledge and skills to independently advance activities within each process. By conducting upstream work such as research in groups while producing final deliverables individually, students will develop both the communication skills necessary for promoting teamwork and their personal design skills. They will aim to enhance their expressive abilities and formative skills to elevate their portfolio level.
The "Portfolio of Activities from Years 1 and 2" is assigned as a prerequisite task, and its submission is mandatory. Work with Styrofoam is scheduled from the very first session. Prepare accordingly.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand user requirements for a given task and independently identify underlying issues and unspoken needs.
  2. Be able to generate ideas for problem-solving and problem-raising, and develop compelling concepts.
  3. Be able to translate concepts into logical and aesthetically pleasing designs. We create designs with meticulous attention to detail.
  4. Be able to present your own design proposals effectively. Be able to produce work samples suitable for inclusion in a portfolio.

Evaluation method and criteria
Two assignments will be conducted, each accounting for 40% of the total score. Work created by the illustrator and homework submissions will account for the remaining 20%.
Students achieving a total score of 60% or higher will pass.
Each evaluation criterion is based on achievement goals. Furthermore,
while research and concept development for each assignment involve group work, these components are not evaluated individually. The 60% benchmark requires that the final proposal logically translates the research findings and concept into a product design. Additional points are awarded based on the accuracy and originality of the research, the uniqueness and aesthetic appeal of the concept and form, usability, understanding of the product, trends, and a comprehensive perspective.
Illustrator work is primarily assigned as homework, so evaluation occurs simultaneously with homework grading. A perfect submission meeting all specified requirements is scored as 100 points. Points are deducted for non-submission or incompleteness. A score of 60 points is based on submitting at least 60% of the work and demonstrating an understanding of the specified conditions.
