Purpose of class
The purpose of this course is to deepen students’ understanding of different cultures and to cultivate the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly Chinese speakers. The course also aims to help students understand intercultural differences and build a foundation for active engagement in international settings.
Course description
This course seeks to foster intercultural understanding and develop effective communication skills. As a concrete case study in intercultural communication, particular emphasis is placed on understanding Chinese culture and comparing it with Japanese culture in order to enhance students’ ability to communicate with Chinese speakers.
Native speakers of Chinese account for approximately one-fifth of the world’s population. Chinese is widely used not only in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, but also among overseas Chinese communities around the world. Therefore, the ability to communicate effectively with Chinese speakers is considered an essential component of cultural literacy in contemporary society.
