Purpose of class
1. Learn that visualizing your ideas helps organize your thinking and facilitates communication. Understand that conveying ideas to others requires both understanding your audience and presenting them with organized clarity.
2. Evolve your perspective through design work. Develop the natural ability to observe purposefully rather than vaguely.
3. Master fundamental sketching techniques to create accurate, communicative sketches quickly.
Course description
The fundamental abilities required of designers include the observation and analytical skills to grasp the essence of things, the conceptual and compositional skills to translate these insights into concrete measures, and the expressive and communication skills to convey these effectively to others. This exercise focuses on acquiring these abilities through hands-on practice, primarily involving two-dimensional composition such as sketching and drawing, to master the necessary foundational knowledge and mindset. Additionally, through group activities, students learn the behaviors required for effective group work in design activities.
Goals and objectives
  1. By mastering basic skills and perspective drawing techniques, one can achieve accurate sketch representations.
  2. Be able to develop your ideas through sketching and communication with others.
  3. Be able to create design with a conscious focus on the subject matter being communicated, such as images, charts, text, color, and white space.
  4. Be able to accurately express my thoughts and present them effectively.

Evaluation method and criteria
Based on the assumption that all weekly assignments are submitted, evaluation will be conducted on the final submissions for Sketch Exercise 1 and Sketch Exercise 2.
The evaluation criteria are as follows: For Sketch Exercise 1, 75% will be based on sketch expression skills and organization, while 25% will be based on design quality and ideas.
For Sketch Exercise 2, the evaluation will be a comprehensive assessment of the sketch, design, and presentation. Since Exercise 2 is group work, peer evaluation within the group will also be conducted.
Students will be evaluated based on the submissions for both exercises. Those who achieve a total score of 60 points or higher across both submissions will pass.
The baseline for 60 points is demonstrating that in-class exercises are reflected in the work or showing a clear effort to do so. Specifically, this means drawing without reverse perspective and demonstrating at least basic line variation and shadow rendering.
Furthermore, submitting all assigned homework is a prerequisite for evaluation.
