Purpose of class
In this class, students experience HCD approaches and key methodologies. They also learn to evaluate and analyze products and services, as well as the design process.
Course description
As digital technologies and services become increasingly sophisticated and complex, it is no longer sufficient to focus solely on “usability.” Designing the entire user experience—including how users interpret, understand, and emotionally evaluate products and services—has become critical. Against this background, Human-Centered Design (HCD) is positioned as an internationally standardized approach for designing products, services, and environments based on user behavior, cognition, and emotions. HCD, as outlined in ISO 9241-210, is a framework that provides processes and methodologies not only for usability evaluation but also for systematically creating and improving user experience (UX). This course aims to help students understand the fundamental concepts and processes of HCD. They also learn how to incorporate users’ subjective evaluations, emotions, and attributes into the design and analysis of familiar products and information services.
Goals and objectives
  1. Explain the HCD approach and its representative methodologies
  2. Apply HCD methodology to identify the problems to solve
  3. Propose solutions to problems using data obtained by HCD methodologies, and express them as design requirements and concepts.

Evaluation method and criteria
Grades will be based on weekly assignments (30%) and reports (70%), with a minimum passing score of 60. Grade C standard requires not only foundational knowledge of human-centered design but also the attitude to apply that knowledge in design practice.
