Purpose of class
Students will learn the fundamental mechanisms of the Internet and gain a deep understanding of the purposes, functions, and interactions of each layer.
They will also learn how to evaluate network performance using metrics such as throughput, fairness, and robustness, and understand how these metrics affect real-world applications.
Course description
The Internet is used across a wide range of fields. Understanding its mechanisms and underlying technologies is essential not only for those involved in developing network-based services but also for anyone engaged in IT system development.
This course provides a comprehensive explanation of the basic mechanisms of the Internet, covering all layers from the physical layer to the application layer.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understand and explain the purpose and mechanisms of each layer from the physical layer to the application layer.
  2. Understand the relationships and interactions among layers, and the rationale for the layered architecture.
  3. Explain Internet performance metrics (e.g., transmission speed, bandwidth, fairness, throughput, robustness, security) and how these affect practical applications.

Students who achieve a combined score of 60% or higher on the all reports will pass the course.
