Purpose of class
The goals of this course are to acquire the knowledge on physical, chemical, crystallographical, and mechanical properties of materials, especially metals.
Course description
”Material” is inevitably required for making machines. To appropriately choose and utilize materials, you will learn basic knowledge of materials and property of each material.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students can explain mechanical, physical, chemical properties of materials those should be taken into account when they are used as structural materials.
  2. Students can explain crystallographic structures, defects, and their relationship between mechanical properties of structural materials.
Students can explain type of alloys, and the equilibrium diagram of the solid solution type alloy and the eutectic type alloy.
Students can do calculations using the lever rule.
  3. Students can explain thermal treatment of metals.
  4. Students can explain strength and tests of structural materials.
  5. Students can explain basic properties of structural materials (metals, polymers, ceramics, composite materials), especially steels.
