Purpose of class
The goal of this course is to deepen the understanding of the languages and cultures of various regions of the world, investigate and reflect on issues related to language and culture, and foster an awareness as a member of global society (global citizen).
Course description
The number of foreign tourists visiting Japan and foreign residents living in Japan continues to increase every year. In today’s rapidly globalizing society, it is more important than ever to engage with people from different cultural backgrounds who speak different languages and to deepen mutual understanding. This course provides an overview of 28 major languages and cultures from all regions of the world (Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas). Additionally, students who choose the active learning option for their final assignment will have the opportunity to interact with foreigners, experience different languages and cultures firsthand, and reflect on related issues.

  1. Gain a deep understanding of the languages and cultures of various regions of the world.
  2. Become able to research and reflect on issues related to language and culture.
  3. Develop an awareness as a member of global society (global citizen).
