Purpose of class
The objective of this class is for students to learn basic knowledge about the characteristics and applications of organic materials, thermal characteristics and mechanical characteristics. It requires understanding the equations for various average molecular weight, static viscoelasticity, and polymerization kinetics. Students will acquire the skill to explain application of a particular polymer in connection to the structural formula of the polymer.
Course description
In this class, students will learn basic knowledge of organic materials, such as characteristics of organic materials, functions and applications. We focus on the basic characteristics of the thermal and mechanical properties of organic materials and the explanation of polymerization reactions. Recent trends of organic material will also be discussed. The cross-sectional knowledge of materials, which is essential for material researchers and engineers, is an expected outcomes.
Goals and objectives
  1. Quantitatively describing basic properties of polymers using various average molecular weights, phase transition points, mechanical coefficients
  2. Understanding the characteristics of polymerization reactions with classifying them
  3. Acquiring basic knowledge about applications of polymer
