Purpose of class
Paint & Coatings materials generate function when they are formed as a coating film on the surface of a substrate, and they are used in a wide variety of industries.
Participants are expected to be able to utilize the basic knowledge about Paint and Coatings they have acquired in this course when they take on technical design responsibilities in their future fields of expertise (e.g. architecture, civil engineering, automotive manufacturing, industrial product manufacturing, etc.).
And also, participants are expected to understand and recognize how their current academic studies relate to real-world work.
Course description
Paint and coatings are widely used not only for social infrastructure but also for various materials used in all kinds of the products for purposes such as corrosion protection and aesthetic appearance. Recently, functional paints have also been developed that impart various functions to paint films.
This course provides basic education on the properties of the organic materials that make up the paint and the engineering techniques related to their application and use, as well as explaining the required functions and applied technologies for each paint application field.
Furthermore, lectures will cover technologies and issues related to high performance, labor saving, energy conservation, LCC (Life Cycle Cost), safety, and global environmental issues, as well as the situation of Japan’s paint industry in the world and its future.
Goals and objectives
  1. Understanding the basics of paint and color chemistry
  2. Understand the properties, raw materials, and coatings of paints and coatings
  3. Understanding architectural paints, anti-corrosion paints, and automotive paints
  4. Understanding Industrial and Functional Coatings
  5. Understanding quality, safety, testing, analysis and the environment

Evaluation method and criteria
Five report assignments will be given. Each of the five reports will be graded on a scale of 100 points, and a student will pass if their average score is over 60 points. The assignment for each session is basically a report of about 400 to 600 words, in which students select a topic from several ”perspectives” provided by the instructor and create the report. The report must summarize the main points concisely and logically.
The standard score is 75 points, and in principle, points will be added or subtracted for the following items.
Deduction of points : forgetting to write your name, not following instructions, typos, unclear argument, factual errors, ignoring lecture content, etc.
Additional points : The overall argument of the report is clear, it is written based on past your experience, it pointed out an error in the lecture content, it taught me something I didn’t know, it asked a sharp question, etc.
As a general rule, depending on these item, 2 to 5 points will be deducted and 3 to 10 points will be added from the standard score, but this is not limited to this.
Reports must be submitted by the set deadline, except in cases where reasonable accommodation is required. With the exception of the final assignment, if the report is submitted after the deadline, a large number of points will be deducted in addition to the grading criteria mentioned above. Furthermore, if the report is not submitted within one week after the deadline, it will be marked as ”not submitted.” For the final assignment, submission of the report after the deadline will not be accepted.
