Purpose of class
The purposes of this course are to foster communication skills in STEM field and to understand how basic scientific skills and discipline-specific knowledge are used for problem-finding and -solving in the real world.
Course description
Students will search and read scientific and engineering papers useful for the graduation thesis research, summarize each content, and give a presentation on the surveyed results to the supervisor and the laboratory members every week. Through these activities, students will foster communication skills in STEM field, and understand how basic scientific skills and discipline-specific knowledge are utilized in problem-finding and -solving in a real R&D site. Furthermore, before starting graduation thesis research, students need to realize the importance of engineering ethics, in particular, the citation of former research accomplishments by other researchers. It is also important how to refer to the information in the website. Students will prepare an experimental notebook to record the daily experimental results, which can be used to ensure the originality of the work.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students can search, read and understand a wide range of scientific and engineering papers and give a presentation on it in front of the supervisor and the laboratory members.
  2. Students can discuss the research with a variety of members in the laboratory such as the supervisor, post-doctoral researchers, teaching assistants and senior students, and accept the advice from them.
  3. Students can connect book knowledge to real-world applications, develop an appreciation for research in their field and show their achievement at the end of semester presentation.
