Purpose of class
The aim is to help students think and act independently about the future of East Asia, by understanding the historical relationship between Japan, China, and Korea.
Course description
East Asia faces many challenges to its stability. Nationalistic and exclusive ideas are on the rise in Japan, China, and South Korea, which are located in this region. The idea of an East Asian Community, similar to the EU, which would limit some aspects of national sovereignty, seems very unlikely to happen. Moreover, the conflicts rooted in their tragic history remain unresolved.

How can we promote peace and stability in East Asia under these difficult circumstances?
To find some clues, we will examine the history of China, Korea, and Japan, paying attention to their interactions with each other.
We will trace the evolution of their relationships from the past to the present.
My goal is to help students view East Asia from three different perspectives.
Goals and objectives
  1. We can understand both through the history of China and Korea.
  2. We will be able to understand the international political history of East Asia.
  3. We will be able to understand the relationship between Japan and both countries.
