Purpose of class
The purpose of this class is to help the students develop the English communication skills, especially in reading and listening, that are required for science and engineering experts.
Course description
As a first step toward acquiring the communication skills in English that are required for science and engineering experts, in this class for the first-year students, you will develop the four skills of English, possibly including speaking skills and writing skills but especially reading and listening comprehension, building on what you learned in high school. You will read and listen to a variety of basic materials, so that you will understand various ways of English expression, accumulate a stock of English expressions, improve the ability of listening, and acquire a basic English proficiency that will allow you to learn more advanced English for science and technology.
This class takes advantage of e-learning, which you are expected to complete outside the class in order to familiarize yourselves with a number of English expression; the material for this e-learning, which will be available in the learning-management system, Scomb, is called ”New Super Eigo”, and you are required to study the designated lessons in it during the semester.
Additionally, you must take the TOEIC test held at the time of final examination. Your TOEIC score, which will be converted with 500 points as a perfect score and 250 as zero score, will be included in the evaluation.

Notes:
• Based on the placement data, you will be assigned either to the “English Basic Skills I” class or to the “English Advanced Skills I” class before the semester begins.
•Students with the placement data which is lower than the criteria score should take ”English Remedial Course I” in parallel with this class. If you did not pass the ”English Remedial Course I”, you can not obtain the unit of the class ”English Basic Skills I”.
• If you pass ”English Remedial Course I” but fail ”English Basic Skills I”, there is no need to re-take the ”English Remedial Course I” when you re-take the ”English Basic Skills I”.
Goals and objectives
  1. <Reading> I can understand main ideas presented in the English passages in the textbook and TOEIC tests.
  2. <Listening> I can understand main ideas of conversations and lectures in English in the textbook and TOEIC tests.
  3. <Vocabulary> I can use the expressions in the textbook and TOEIC tests.
  4. <Grammar> I can use the grammatical expressions in the textbook and TOEIC tests.
  5. I can learn how to solve problems through doing group work and studying speeches given both by myself and by others.

60 points is the level at which you can understand most of the text and the audio in the textbook.

You have to attend at least 2/3 of the class meetings in order to obtain the credit for this course.
If you have to skip a class meeting for a special reason, submit ”Kesseki-todoke” (an absence report) to ”Gakusei-ka” (the student affairs section).

Office hours and How to contact professors for questions
  • (1) Check the FAQ online (ScombZ > Community> English Learning Support Room in the College of Systems Engineering and Science).
  • (2) If your problem is not addressed in the FAQ, submit a “check-in sheet” online (ScombZ > Community> English Learning Support Room in the College of Systems Engineering and Science). The support room of the College is open through Monday to Friday. (More information about the schedule is available online.) Consider visiting the room if and when you can.
  • (3) If your question is specifically concerned with a particular class, send an email to the instructor of the class; the email address is given on the class page on the ScombZ. Do not forget to include in the email the class details such as the day of the week, the period, the course title).
Alternatively you can ask the teacher before or after the class.
