Purpose of class
This course is positioned as a foundation for the teacher education–related subjects that students will study over the next four years. The lectures cover a wide range of topics, including the significance and history of school education and the teaching profession, as well as teacher organizations and school culture. The course aims to enable students to understand the foundational knowledge that underpins the qualities and competencies required of the teaching profession.
Course description
In this course, students will develop an understanding of how teachers respond to various issues in school settings, with a focus on ensuring children’s growth in a safe and secure environment. In addition, the course aims to help students aspiring to become teachers understand how subject instruction is carried out in practice.
This course is a required subject for obtaining a teaching license in this university’s teacher education program. Students enrolled in this course are expected to have a strong interest in the teaching profession.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students will gain an understanding of the systems and structures required to become a teacher, and will be able to consider their mindset for undertaking teacher education as well as their future academic planning in university life.
  2. Students will examine the significance of school education and the teaching profession from a historical perspective, and will be able to understand issues related to schooling and teachers up to the present day.
  3. Students will analyze contemporary school organizations and the roles and responsibilities of teachers, and will consider the social mission of teachers as well as the qualities and competencies required of future educators.
  4. Throughout the course, students will reflect objectively on their own educational experiences and will be able to envision their ideal teacher identity and their future career as educators.

Textbooks and reference materials
Students are encouraged to bring the Course of Study Guidelines for Junior High Schools (announced December 2017, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) for their main subject, as well as the Course of Study Guidelines for Senior High Schools (announced March 2018, MEXT) for their main subject.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to regularly follow news related to education. In addition, they should clearly organize and reflect on their own motivation for aspiring to become a teacher.
In some cases, the university may require classes to be conducted via Zoom. When this occurs, information such as the schedule for online classes will be announced through Scomb.
Students enrolled between AY2021 and AY2025 may take this course only if they are registered in the teacher education program.

Applicable This course is taught by an instructor with extensive experience as a science teacher at private junior and senior high schools, specializing in the instruction of project-based research and inquiry-based activities in science and technology, as well as research into ICT integration in education. Leveraging this expertise, the instructor will lecture on the foundational knowledge, mindset, and instructional methods necessary to cultivate the qualities and skills required for science education and the guidance of inquiry-based learning.
