Purpose of class
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental statistical knowledge in the fields of environment and urban studies, as well as certification schemes related to the assessment of societal sustainability, which are essential for developing practical measures toward the realization of a sustainable society based on the concept of the SDGs.
Course description
This course provides a comprehensive study of fundamental statistical knowledge in the fields of environment and urban studies, as well as certification schemes related to the assessment of societal sustainability, which are essential for considering practical measures toward the realization of a sustainable society based on the concept of the SDGs.

The course consists of 14 lectures delivered in an omnibus format, with seven sessions each conducted by full-time faculty members specializing in environmental and urban studies. In addition, practitioners with relevant professional experience may be invited as guest lecturers when appropriate.

This course is designed to enable students to acquire the prerequisite knowledge required for the course “Basic Exercises in Urban Planning and Environmental Systems”.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students will be able to describe the types of fundamental statistical data necessary for sustainability assessment and the ways in which such data can be obtained.
  2. Students will be able to describe corporate sustainability management and the major national and global trends that shape it.
  3. Students will be able to describe the essential components of sustainable urban development from the viewpoints of architecture, urban planning, and environmental studies.

Applicable Drawing on the instructor’s experience in research on sustainability assessment in the fields of urban studies, environment, and architecture, this course provides practical training on how to interpret and analyze fundamental statistical data required for sustainability assessment. In addition, experts engaged in professional sustainability evaluation practices in each field will participate in the course to explain relevant assessment methodologies and certification schemes.
