Purpose of class
Students will explore the diverse landscape of global challenges within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, with a particular focus on the role of local governments and cities in advancing sustainability initiatives. Through the analysis of municipal policies, urban governance approaches, and real-world case studies, students will gain insights into practical strategies that support local progress towards the SDGs.
Course description
Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have drawn increasing attention from local governments and cities around the world. While national governments set overarching policy frameworks, municipalities play a critical role in implementing and localizing the SDGs in response to pressing challenges such as climate change, water and food security, poverty, demographic change, and inequality. This course explores how cities and local governments translate global sustainability goals into urban policy and planning practices within the context of interconnected global crises. It emphasizes local governance and institutional arrangements, and their implications for addressing societal and environmental challenges at the municipal level.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students can explain the principles and objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated SDGs.
  2. Students can analyze the motivations, challenges, and opportunities for local government involvement in sustainable development efforts.
  3. Students can analyze best practices and case studies illustrating successful local government engagement in addressing sustainability challenges across cities.
  4. Students can critically evaluate sustainable development initiatives within their professional spheres.
