Purpose of class
The objective of this course is to develop students’ mathematical way of thinking through a more systematic and rigorous study than that encountered in high school, and to provide them with the fundamental knowledge required for understanding important results and solving concrete problems in applications.
Course description
As calculus constitutes one of the most fundamental mathematical tools in systems engineering as well as in virtually all fields of science and technology, students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the material presented in this course.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students will be able to evaluate the limits of sequences, series, and functions, and determine their convergence or divergence.
  2. Students will understand the definition of the derivative of a function of one variable, be able to compute derivatives of specific functions, and use differential calculus to investigate the properties of functions.
  3. Students will understand the definition of the integral of a single-variable function and be able to compute indefinite, definite, and improper integrals of elementary functions.
