Purpose of class
Students will acquire the ability to compute determinants and understand determinants, their properties, and their relationship to inverse matrices. Furthermore, they will learn how to diagonalize matrices and orthogonally diagonalize real symmetric matrices.
Course description
This course is a continuation of Linear Algebra I and covers the theory of matrices. The first half deals with determinants, their properties, computational techniques, and their relationship to inverse matrices. The second half develops the theory of matrix diagonalization by extending the diagonalization of 2×2 matrices studied in Linear Algebra I, and concludes with the orthogonal diagonalization of real symmetric matrices.
