Purpose of class
Objects in the real world have finite dimensions. This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of important physical quantities, such as the centre of mass and moment of inertia, and to enable them to formulate and solve the equations governing the motion of rigid bodies.
Course description
Mechanics II builds on Mechanics I, which covers the mechanics of a single-particle system. The course progresses from the motion of systems of particles and rigid bodies to the motion of deformable bodies, particularly elastic bodies.

Students will study angular momentum as a physical quantity used to describe rotational motion, as well as torque, which determines changes in angular momentum. The course also covers fictitious forces, including centrifugal and Coriolis forces. Through these topics, the course aims to help students understand the fundamental properties of various types of motion and develop a sound approach to physical reasoning.

The course consists of five in-person sessions—the first and final sessions and three sessions during the semester—and nine sessions delivered through a combination of live online and on-demand instruction.

In-class assessment tests will be conducted during each in-person session except the first. The assessment in the final session will be the final examination.

The detailed schedule of the in-person sessions other than the first and final sessions will be explained during the first class.
Goals and objectives
  1. Students will be able to understand the concepts of angular momentum and torque and apply them to specific problems.
  2. Students will be able to distinguish between internal and external forces and derive the laws governing the motion of the centre of mass and rotational motion from the equations of motion for a system of particles and Newton’s third law of motion.
  3. Students will be able to formulate and solve the equations of motion for rigid bodies.

Evaluation method and criteria
As a general rule, students will be assessed based on short online Assessment Tests A, which serve as homework and are given in most classes (10%); in-class Assessment Tests B, which review each unit and are given approximately once every three or four classes (30%); a report (20%); and an in-class final examination (40%).

A total score of 60% or higher is required to pass the course. This corresponds to a level at which students understand the fundamental material covered in the course and are able to solve related problems.

Further details will be provided during the first class.

This course is offered in cooperation with the Learning Support Centre, and some students may be required to use its services.
