Purpose of class
  The objective of Undergraduate Thesis Research is to cultivate problem-solving skills by encouraging students to independently identify challenges in society and science toward achieving a sustainable society. Students will engage in research activities that utilize specialized knowledge and techniques in science and engineering from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective.
  In Undergraduate Thesis Research 3, students objectively verify their mastery of the foundational research skills acquired in Undergraduate Thesis Research 1 and 2. Furthermore, they clearly establish a research theme aimed at addressing societal challenges or contributing to the advancement of science that supports the foundations of society.
Course description
  In Undergraduate Thesis Research 3, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, students formulate research policies, plans, and methodologies tailored to their specific research themes and engage in practical research activities from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students conduct their research activities systematically while sharing progress with their advisor and laboratory members.
Goals and objectives
  1. [Understanding Research Objectives and Their Social Significance]
    Students will be able to clearly define a specific research topic aimed at contributing to the realization of a sustainable society or the advancement of science that supports the foundations of society, and logically explain its academic value and potential social impact from both professional and systems-oriented perspectives.
  2. [Literature Review and Critical Analysis]
    Students will be able to conduct a comprehensive review of the latest academic literature and advanced technical information related to their research topic, critically analyze the originality and advantages of their own research in comparison with existing studies, and clearly establish its theoretical foundation.
  3. [Research Planning and Methodology]
    Students will be able to develop a practical and well-defined research plan and methodology appropriate to their research objectives, and independently carry out their research while appropriately revising their plans in response to unexpected challenges or changes in experimental data through discussions with their academic supervisor and laboratory members.
  4. [Technical Writing and Presentation Skills]
    Students will be able to organize the progress and intermediate results of their research into logical and objective technical documents (e.g., interim research reports), deliver persuasive presentations both within and outside the laboratory, and further deepen their understanding through interdisciplinary discussions.
  5. [Self-Directed Career Development]
    Based on the University's philosophy of practical engineering education, students will be able to conduct research independently while adhering to the highest standards of research ethics, clearly relating their current research activities to their future career goals and recognizing their responsibilities as science and engineering professionals who contribute to society.

Evaluation method and criteria
Grades will be determined based on a weighting of the following criteria:
① Problem Identification and Understanding of Social Significance (20%)
② Ability to Survey and Analyze Existing Research (20%)
③ Formulation of Research Plans and Methodological Selection (20%)
④ Logical Writing and Presentation Skills (20%)
⑤ Autonomous Career Development Skills (20%)
Note: A rubric (5-point scale) will be applied to the above five items. A passing grade of “60 points (on a 100-point scale)” will be awarded to students who obtain an average score of 3 or higher across all five items.
