Purpose of class
  The objective of Comprehensive Research is to cultivate problem-solving skills by encouraging students to independently identify challenges in society and science toward achieving a sustainable society. Students will engage in research activities that utilize specialized knowledge and techniques in science and engineering from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective.
  In Undergraduate Thesis Research 4, as the culmination of the research activities cultivated through Research 1–3, students will practically address problem-solving within their major field and related specific areas from a holistic and interdisciplinary viewpoint. Students are expected to maintain an ethical perspective as professionals contributing to society, remain conscious of their social responsibilities, and produce a research paper (including design) that is clear and accessible to third parties.
Course description
  In Undergraduate Thesis Research 4, students will engage in practical problem-solving based on holistic and interdisciplinary perspectives. Furthermore, the course aims to improve comprehensive communication skills to ensure that research outcomes are conveyed accurately, reliably, and attractively.
Goals and objectives
  1. [Understanding Research Objectives and Their Social Significance]
    Students will be able to clearly define a specific research topic aimed at contributing to the realization of a sustainable society or the advancement of science that supports the foundations of society, and logically explain its academic value and potential social impact from both professional and systems-oriented perspectives.
  2. [Integration of Information and Scholarly/Technical Evaluation]
    Systematically organize and integrate the information collected thus far, and logically explain the objective significance and utility of their research findings in comparison with existing knowledge.
  3. [Research Planning and Methodology]
    Students will be able to develop a practical and well-defined research plan and methodology appropriate to their research objectives, and independently carry out their research while appropriately revising their plans in response to unexpected challenges or changes in experimental data through discussions with their academic supervisor and laboratory members.
  4. [Technical Writing and Presentation Skills]
    Students will be able to organize the progress and intermediate results of their research into logical and objective technical documents (e.g., interim research reports), deliver persuasive presentations both within and outside the laboratory, and further deepen their understanding through interdisciplinary discussions.
  5. [Self-Directed Career Development]
    Based on the University’s philosophy of practical engineering education, students will be able to conduct research independently while adhering to the highest standards of research ethics, clearly relating their current research activities to their future career goals and recognizing their responsibilities as science and engineering professionals who contribute to society.

Evaluation method and criteria
Grades will be determined based on a weighting of the following criteria:
① Problem Solving and Verification of Social Contribution (20%)
② Integration of Information and Scholarly/Technical Evaluation (20%)
③ Planned Execution Based on Systems Thinking (20%)
④ Logical Information Dissemination and Communication (20%)
⑤ Autonomous Career Development Based on Professional Ethics (20%)
Note: A rubric (5-point scale) will be applied to the above five items. A passing grade of “60 points (on a 100-point scale)” will be awarded to students who obtain an average score of 3 or higher across all five items.
